Doug's safety tips
  • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings and of the people around you.
  • Always try to park in a well-lit parking spot.
  • Always lock your doors and don't open your doors for people you don't know.
  • Don't flash large sums of cash and refrain from wearing fancy jewelry.
  • Do not be easily distracted or take your eyes off of someone you feel looks suspicious.
  • Whenever possible, "buddy up" to walk out of dark parking lots.
  • Always inform family or friends of your location, and give them an itinerary of where you expect to travel.
  • Either do not respond to a conversation from a suspicious person or continue walking while providing an answer.
  • Walk confidently, at a steady pace, and have your keys ready.
  • Avoid being on a cellphone or with headphones in your ears unaware of your surroundings. This makes you an easy target.
  • Avoid stationary cars with their engines running and people sitting in them.
  • Try to keep both hands free and don't walk with your hands in your pockets.
  • If you have a concealed carry permit, make sure the state you are in honors that permit. If you have a stun gun or Taser, make sure it's legal to carry as well.
  • Always try to be the best witness. Remember as much about the suspect as possible, and include any vehicle descriptions and direction of travel.
  • Never escalate the situation by arguing with the suspect. The ultimate goal is to get out of the situation unharmed. LL
